Nationwide School Safety Issue

Capital School District's Response to a Nationwide School Safety Issue
Senator Nation,

We want to make you aware of a statewide issue that occurred this morning.

At approximately 9:00 am, a Dover Police Department 911 dispatcher received a call regarding a potentially armed person at South Dover Elementary School. A similar call occurred in multiple districts regarding several schools in those districts. This is likely similar to several prank calls that have been occurring throughout the nation.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Dover Police Department and Capital School District staff placed South Dover Elementary School on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes. During the lockdown, the building and grounds were searched to eliminate any potential threats.  We want to report that no weapons or other threats were found. We will limit outside activities and there will be extra security throughout the District. Schools will not have recess today, and we will be limiting visitors to all schools to only secure areas. We treat all alerts seriously and are taking these extra steps to ensure our students’ and staff’s safety.

We want to thank the Dover Police Department, in partnership with our safety and security team, for their professional response to continuously safeguard the well-being of our students, staff, and community. In the Capital School District, safety remains our most important priority.

According to reports from neighboring districts, there have been multiple reports of similar calls made this morning across the state of Delaware. Other districts in our community are also adopting similar extra safety measures by limiting outside activities and visitors. As Senators, we must be reminded that if you see anything suspicious, please report it immediately.

The Capital School District will fully prosecute anyone involved in pranks that compromise the safety and well-being of our school community. We will continue to be vigilant regarding keeping our students, staff, and community safe.

Thank you.

Regards,

Dr. Vilicia Cade
