Staff OpeningCapital School District welcomed all employees at a special “Welcome Back” event at Dover High School on August 21, 2018. The program began in the DHS auditorium with a rousing performance of Rolling Thunder, Dover High School’s drumline. After the presentation of colors by members of the Dover High School AFJROTC and the pledge of allegiance, led by a mixed group of Project SEARCH interns and Capital students, the Senator Singers—students from different schools throughout the district—sang the National Anthem. Dr. Sylvia M. Henderson, Assistant Director, then stepped up to the microphone to welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year. School Board President John C. Martin, Jr., introduced special, invited guests, including Mayor Robin Christiansen, Dover Councilmen Matthew J. Lindell and Fred A. Neil, Congressman Trey Paradee and Senator Brian Bushweller, Levy Court Commissioners Allen Angel and Jim Hosfelt as well as members of the Board of Education. Dr. Dan Shelton, Superintendent of Capital School District, gave a presentation of encouragement, goals and the recipe for success in his good-humored style, which was well received by everyone in attendance. He stressed “The secret ingredient in our student success is the amazing teachers and staff in the Capital School District.” Dr. Shelton then introduced the Keynote Speaker—Honorable Lisa Blunt Rochester, United States Representative. Congresswoman Blunt-Rochester’s talk inspired teachers, staff and administrators to take care of themselves so that they can bring everything they have to their students. She reiterated how important educators are to their students as they plant the seeds for success in their students’ lives and their futures. She continued with the recipe theme, and she received a standing ovation for her moving oration. Capital’s Recipe for success continued with presentations to the 2019 Teachers of the Year and the sharing of their recipes for success in their classrooms and schools. The 2019 District Teacher of the Year, Joseph Fuller, was inspirational in reminding everyone that each person is touched by or touches others with whom they come in contact. The District employees left the event reenergized and excited about the new school year.
