Delaware State University Celebrates DHS Students
Delaware State University Celebrates DHS StudentsDelaware State University Downtown Black History Month Expression Contest celebrated the winning pieces of students from Dover High School through a celebration. The contest ran through the month of February 2022 for Dover High School Students. Each participant was asked to create an expression of gratitude (essay, poetry, video, artwork, etc.) toward a Black, African American person who has inspired or impacted their life. “We are proud of our Dover High School Senators who elected to exhibit their thoughtful, meaningful pieces for Black History Month. We are grateful for our partnership with Delaware State University and the impactful forum they have provided to our students,” said Dr. Vilicia Cade, CEO and Superintendent of the Capital School District.

Delaware State University continues to play a major role in ensuring that Black History instruction is included in the education programming in all school districts and charter schools in Delaware. Through the contest, DSU sought to empower educators in the surrounding areas of DSU to give their students the opportunity to use their creative expression to honor Blacks, African Americans who have made an impact in their life. Individuals honored could be a student’s family member, teacher, neighbor, pastor, athlete, etc. “Reading through these student entries, I had plenty of tear-jerking moments,” said Candy Young, Program Director of Strategic Initiatives at Delaware State University Downtown. The Black History Month contest partnered with House of Coffi and Dover Public Library to showcase contest entries.
