Greetings Senator Nation!
Please remember to be on the lookout for our COVID weekly data update text. If you have provided your child’s school with an updated phone number, you will receive a text at 6:00 pm to check our weekly COVID update on the designated area on our website.
It’s my privilege to share the weekly update for the Week of November 19th.
This week, we celebrated American Education week to remind and continually inspire us to make education in our schools even better! We honor students, parents, educators and the community for their commitment and dedication to educational excellence.
During this week, we had a visit to South Dover Elementary from the Secretary of Education, Dr. Susan Bunting. This visit was in celebration of the Delaware’s Sapphire Award for Excellence in School Counseling which was awarded to South Dover Elementary School. Shout out to Mrs. Tammy Taylor, school counselor for her the critical role she played in making this happen.
During this week I visited Kent County Secondary Intensive Learning Center and Dover High School. Kudos, to the Dover High School administrators for honoring over 40 students at the Principal’s Pick celebration. Each month a different theme is utilized to select and celebrate students—this month’s theme was focused on our Senators that manage time well by being ON TIME to school and classes! Students were treated to a special luncheon with the principals and given a certificate. Next month DHS will be honoring our RESPECTFUL Senators.
Thursday we convened the monthly Trauma and School Connectedness Task Force. We had a presentation from Group Violence Intervention (GVI). The group provided information about group violence and how they provide support through partnerships to make our communities and schools safer. GVI also helps students build communication and problem-solving, empathy and conflict management skills.
My week included a robust schedule of meetings with community leaders and legislators. I visited the United Way Monday and on Tuesday, I met with Police Chief Johnson to discuss our continued partnership and ways to enhance safety and security across the district. On Wednesday, I attended a meet and greet at the Downtown Delaware State University’s Campus with our Shan Green, Principal of Central Middle School. To explore how to expand the communities use of the new campus Kudos to Dr. Allen, President of DSU and Dr. Stacy Downing, Chief Administrator of the new Downtown DSU campus!
This week we also recognized Capital’s School Psychologists by reading a proclamation for National School Psychology Week November 8-12, 2021.during our board meeting on Wednesday. On Thursday, I attended meetings at the Capital City Rotary Club of Dover and met with the CEA executive board during our monthly Liaison meeting. My evening concluded with my attendance at an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service with Senator Paradee. Today I wrapped up my week with the U.S. Attorney for the State of Delaware, David C. Weiss to explore our new partnership to incorporate into our 10th grade curriculum the opportunity to prepare high school drivers for police stops. The main goal of the program is to prepare young drivers to respond properly to all traffic stops to ensure students and officers are safer.
It continues to be a privilege and honor to serve Senator Nation. As we lean into basketball season, I want to wish our Senator good luck as they travel to Delcastle to defend our senator pride! Go Senator and stay safe.
With Senator Pride,
Dr. Vilicia Cade
Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent
Capital School District
