Update for 7/07/2020

Senator Summer Communication from
Dr. Sylvia M. Henderson, Interim Superintendent

Capital School District established a School Reopening Task Force at the end of the school year to develop a roadmap for reopening schools in August.  The task force is divided into 4 major areas – Health/Wellness, Academics/Equity, Human Resources, and Operations/Services.  Work group members represent a diverse group of stakeholders throughout the district and sub-committees will stem from each work group with each accomplishing specific and direct tasks to make the most informed decisions on the reopening. Your input is important to us.  Please complete survey here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KTXH8Y2

Each work group has been instructed to plan for three different scenarios for reopening:

  1. All students return for in person learning while following the CDC guidelines
  2. Remote learning continues with no in person instruction
  3. Remote learning with some in person learning (Hybrid)

State and national guidance is being reviewed and all plans will follow health  guidelines and safety precautions set forth by the Delaware Division of Public Health and Governor Carney’s State of Emergency declaration.  Currently we are in Phase 2 of the state's reopening plan.

We are not able to answer the big questions we are all asking, “When are we going back to school and what will it look like?” Please know that we are working throughout the summer to be ready for any of the above 3 scenarios.  We will continue to provide information as updates become available with our progress based on the recommendations from Governor Carney’s State Reopening Committees.

Here are some Summer Updates from Capital:

  • Our At-Home Senator Summer Boost started Monday June 29 with distance learning for several hundred students.  The At-School and Hybrid Approach Senator Summer Boost begins on July 13 for Secondary Students meeting at WHMS and the Elementary Students meeting at two sites East, and Booker T. • Meals are continuing to be distributed to roughly 70 sites throughout the summer.  To identify the site closest to you along with delivery times please visit http://bit.ly/csdmealdelivery
  • We are accepting Kindergarten and new student registrations online.  Additional details can be found on the following enrollment page: https://www.capital.k12.de.us/for_families/enroll_now.  If you plan to visit a school, please call and set up an appointment. Families are also reminded to update their address and contact information with the school if they have changed recently..

We want to thank our students, staff, and parents for all that you have done to keep moving forward during this pandemic time.  Each of you have supported learning for our students, communicated with us when needs or issues occurred, and celebrated student milestones with an emphasis on our graduating seniors. Please know we are continuing to hire staff and plan for the 2020-2021 school year in whatever form it may take!  We will continue to provide technology supports for all students and to assist families in connecting with community resources.  Have a great summer and stay healthy!
