Senator Update for October 9th, 2020

Dear Senator Nation,

Thank you for your strong response to the Learning Approach Commitment. We are pouring over the details you provided and will continue to send out the latest information to our families through these Senator Updates. Our next Board of Education meeting will be Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 7 pm.  Our board of education  will discuss the current pandemic conditions and make a decision about when students will transition into the Hybrid Learning model. Within the latest update are some highlights from around the district, as well as important information for individuals visiting our buildings. Thank you for continuing to reach out to your child’s school principal with questions and for your continued collaboration.

Hybrid and Remote Learning Updates

  • Deep Cleaning Continues - Custodians continue to safeguard against COVID-19 through continued cleaning in our classrooms and buildings. We thank them for their hard work and determination. You'll find some recent photos of the custodians at work.
  • Hybrid Preparations - Teachers came in today to prepare their classrooms. They are excited that students will soon be joining them for both in-school and remote learning.
  • Hybrid Bus Pickup Locations - Bus schedules will be emailed within the next several days to parents of students participating in the Hybrid Learning Model.
  • Student Cohorts - Students are currently being placed into groups based upon the Learning Approach Commitment Response. Additional information will be shared with families in the coming weeks.

The 2020-2021 State Teacher of the Year will be selected on OctoberMrs. Julie Eaby, CSD Teacher of the Year 13th. Let's wish Mrs. Julie Eaby all the best as we wait for the decision! Mrs. Eaby began her teaching career in 1993 and has been a member of the Senator Nation for 11 years. For the past two years, she has been teaching 4th grade at Booker T. Senators Promote Fire Prevention Week

Dover Fire Department collaborated with the Capital School District to develop a National Fire Prevention Week Video.  During National Fire Prevention Week (October 4- 10), children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.  A special thank you goes out to all who supported and participated in the creation of this very important project.  Watch the video here.

Keeping our Senators Healthy and Safe

Our custodial team continues to follow CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting all school areas and classrooms in order to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff.  As we celebrate National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day, be sure to thank your custodian for their dedication and hard work in keeping our Senators safe.

On October 9, teachers spent the day in their classrooms creating warm and welcoming environments in preparation for hybrid in-school and remote instruction.

Free COVID-19 Testing in Kent County Delaware

Capital School District is partnering with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency to offer COVID testing prior to the start of in-person learning.  Our goal is to identify any possible risk of asymptomatic students who could accidentally spread the virus.  We are strongly encouraging every student to get tested.  To facilitate this process, we are working closely with Kent County to develop and communicate testing options.  Testing will take place at specific Capital school locations on November 4th and 5th.  Additional details will be provided in the coming weeks.  If you are interested in receiving a free test before these dates, please visit any of the locations listed below.

Visitors to Capital School District Facilities

All visitors are required to wear a mask or face covering that fully covers the nose and mouth at all times. Neck gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings as testing shows that they do not provide sufficient protection. Visitors who arrive without a mask or appropriate face covering may request a mask at the front desk.

Guests are required to stand behind the plexiglass shield installed at reception desks.

Before entering the building, all visitors must answer the COVID-19 screening questions below. Any person who answers "yes" to one or more of these questions will be prohibited from entering school and district buildings.

  • In the past 14 days, have you been near (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) a person who has a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 or have you had direct contact with the mucus or saliva of a person who has a lab-confirmed case?
  • In the last 48 hours, have you had any of the following symptoms?
    • New cough
    • New trouble breathing, shortness of breath or severe wheezing
    • New chills or shaking with chills
    • New muscle aches
    • Sore throat
    • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
    • Fatigue
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • New loss of smell or taste, or a change in taste
  • In the past 48 hours, have you had a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher?
Approved visitors, including parents or guardians, will only be granted access to identified meeting rooms and offices.  No visitors will be allowed in classrooms.  In all cases, a building administrator will make the final decision as to whether a visitor will be provided access to any part of the facility.  Volunteers are not permitted to visit our schools at this time.  When possible, mentors, college representatives, guest speakers, etc. will be provided virtual access.
