Update for 2/12/2021

Dear Senator Nation,

Welcome to the second semester of the school year!Senator Update

Capital’s Core Equity Team is looking for others to join in the work of building equity throughout the district, so please consider completing the interest survey included in this update.  National School Counselor Week was last week, and we honor and thank our counselors for the great work they do!

In this update, you’ll learn more about how to get involved.  You’ll also get a glimpse of Dover High School’s first week of in-school hybrid learning. Black History month started last week, and we will be sharing some of the projects that students and teachers are doing to celebrate African American heroes.

In partnership with Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and Mako Medical, Capital School District is hosting a free Pop-Up COVID-19 Testing event for the Kent County area at Dover High School tomorrow, Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 3 pm until 6 pm.

We are also excited to announce a great app for your phones called “Where's The Bus”.  You can see how far the bus is from your child’s bus stop, so that you have a better idea of exactly when it will arrive! Here is a link to the “Where’s the Bus” flyer.

Lastly, learn more about North Dover’s Library Media Specialist, Angela Darling-Spinelli as we spotlight her in our “Teacher Focus” section.

Please stay healthy, happy and safe as we continue to move forward as a Senator Nation in the months ahead!

Sincerely,
Dr. Sylvia M. Henderson

Participate in the Capital School District Equity Strategic Planning Process

At Capital School District, we believe the right to equitable educational opportunity is universal. Achieving equity in education means providing the access, opportunities and supports needed to help students, families and staff reach their full potential. Equity does not mean equal or giving everyone the same thing, but it means giving each person what they need when they need it.

Meet Angela Darling-Spinelli, North Dover Library Media Specialist

Mrs. Angela Darling-Spinneli is a graduate of York College ofNorth Dover Library Specialist Pennsylvania. Her 21 years of teaching have been in the Capital School District.  “After graduating from Dover High, I had a goal of coming back and making Capital my home. I am proud of the education I received as a Senator; the connections I made with the teachers as I grew up helped to foster my love and desire to become a teacher. The teachers here in Capital taught me that I was IMPORTANT, I was CAPABLE of anything I set my mind to, and that learning is FUN and FOREVER!  I wanted the opportunity to create a classroom environment that showcased these values and more.”

Mrs. Darling-Spinneli’s first 20 years as an educator was as a 3rd grade teacher at Booker T. Washington Elementary. This past year, she had the wonderful opportunity to become North Dover’s library media specialist. “I am super excited about this new role which enables me to build a love of books with each student, whether they are a ‘zoomie’ or a ‘roomie’.”  Mrs. Darling-Spinelli wants students to understand that as they crack open a book, another world awaits and a new adventure begins—all as their fingertips steadily turn the pages of a magical book.  “Whether it is through true facts that leads them to new “aha” moments or through fantasy that sweeps them off with the use of the imagination. My students will learn about the beauty of reading.” Whether it is virtual or face to face, she said, the key is to make those connections to build a community of learners who are willing to work together to gain new knowledge and share experiences. “The sheer excitement for learning has not wavered. Although how we approach the learning may look different, the kids are still quite eager to learn!  I look forward to each day that I get to work with the students at North Dover as we explore, discover, and enjoy the love of the library!”

A Reminder for Visitors to a Capital School District building or facility

All visitors are required to wear a mask or face covering that fully covers the nose and mouth at all times. Neck gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings as they are too thin and testing shows that they do not provide sufficient protection.  Visitors who arrive without a mask may request one at the front desk.
